Description

Improving the health of the population, and morbidity and mortality associated with non-communicable diseases, is a national priority. Health education and promotion should focus on avoiding harmful behaviours such as excessive alcohol intake, smoking and poor diet. It is argued that each patient contact should involve health promotion and that healthcare professionals should be encouraged to discuss and support effective lifestyle behaviour change interventions.

Objectives

After reading this module you should be able to:
Describe some of the theories, models and evidence relating to behaviour and behaviour change.
Explain why supporting patients to make positive health and wellbeing choices is important to clinical roles across healthcare.
Describe some barriers to, and facilitators of, behaviour change.
Enable patients to make informed choices about managing their own health and wellbeing, and where to access further support if necessary.
Provide opportunistic, brief advice and understand the principles involved in undertaking positive brief interventions.
