Description

Respiratory tract infections have been identified as the most common healthcare-associated infection in acute hospitals. Patients most at risk are those who are critically ill, in particular patients who are mechanically ventilated. Ventilator-associated pneumonia can have serious consequences for patients, increasing morbidity and mortality rates, duration of ventilation and length of stay in intensive care. This learning module focuses on the prevention of healthcare-associated respiratory tract infections, and discusses strategies that staff can implement to minimise the risk of infection.

Objectives

This module aims to describe the prevalence of healthcare-associated respiratory tract infection, the bacteria most likely to cause it, risk factors, pathogenesis and strategies for infection prevention and control.

On completion of this course you will gain an understanding of:
Provide details of the prevalence of healthcare-associated respiratory tract infection.
List the bacteria most commonly responsible for healthcare-associated respiratory tract infection.
Describe the different types of healthcare-associated respiratory tract infection and related risk factors.
Explain why patients who have undergone surgery and those who are mechanically ventilated are at particular risk.
Outline strategies for infection prevention and control.
