Description

Annual appraisals are an important part of workforce management and staff development. To improve the appraisal process, the professional interests of the practitioner and objectives of the organisation need to be aligned. Nurses should be well prepared for their annual appraisal so that they can gain the most from it, as well as contribute to the work of the team, department and employer. This learning module emphasises the need for the nurse and manager to have a strategy that allows for an honest appraisal of work done, examination of ongoing needs and plans for future work.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to help nurses to prepare more effectively for annual appraisal interviews.

On completion of this course you will gain an understanding of:
Understand the appraisal system and any factors that may hinder or support it.
Evaluate the objectives set during the last appraisal and progress made since then.
List objectives for the forthcoming year that meet practice requirements and respect the practitioner’s professional agenda (including preparatory work for revalidation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)).
Identify development needs.
Examine possible ways forward for personal development that may be suggested as part of the annual appraisal interview.
