Description

Some parents are unhappy with the way news is broken to them. This learning module seeks to educate and inform the reflective practitioner on a series of communication strategies to enhance their skills. This is important because the way news is disclosed can affect the way news is accepted and the level of support the family will require. The importance of clarity, honesty and empathy is emphasised.

Objectives

After completing this module you should be able to:
1. Summarise the key steps in steering families through a difficult discussion.

2. Identify issues that may need to be addressed during such discussions. For example, some relatives may accommodate difficult news at a slower pace and may therefore need more time for further explanation and clarification.

3. Discuss why clarity, honesty and empathy are of crucial importance when breaking bad news.

4. Assess your own communication skills in difficult situations and be able to identify areas for improvement.

Delivering bad news such as the death of a child to a family is a task the nurse does with a heat heart. It demands a nurse who is articulate, emotionally stable and charismatic.
