Description

Health-care-associated infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients worldwide. This CEU course provides nurses with information to help reduce health-care-associated infections, including infections due to antibiotic-resistant organisms, by improving hand hygiene practices and use of gloves.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Enumerate the components of the hand hygiene intervention package and the critical aspects of a multidimensional hand hygiene program.

2. Investigate how transmission of health-care-associated pathogens most often occurs.

3. Identify when nurses should wear gloves according to recommendations listed in the CDC's Standard Precautions.

4. Describe the actions required for competent handwashing.
