Description

Treating and Managing Dysphagia with Dementia is a two part series for physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists. Each part may be taken independently. This series focuses on the variables associated with cognitively impaired patients, dysphagia instruction and memory functions necessary for learning and dysphagia stimulation programming.
Part 1 differentiates the various forms of dementia significantly influencing the therapeutic approach to dysphagia management. The course differentiates cortical/subcortical, static/dynamic and reversible cognitive impairment. The course will outline responses to dysphagia management based on different forms of dementia, stages of dementia and their vastly different memory deficits. The participant will learn how to accurately stage a patient and then manipulate triggers in dysphagia management. The participant will learn how to develop different functional goals for dysphagia management based on the patients diagnosis and stage.

Objectives

On completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Verbalize the differences among cortical and subcortical dementias and how those differences influence dysphagia management.

2. Accurately stage the cognitively impaired patient and will be able to verbalize how differences and staging influence dysphagia management.
