The Picc Preceptor Training course is designed to give the experienced clinician necessary background training with focus on teaching techniques, and understanding your student to help validate newly trained PICC inserters.
PICC Preceptor Training

The goal of PICC precepting is to assist a clinician who has completed PICC didactic training become qualified to perform PICC insertions safely and independently. This course teaches the experienced PICC clinician how to adequately supervise and precept a new inserting clinician.

It includes qualifications required to become a preceptor, responsibilities of the preceptor, effective teaching methods, learning styles, and what skills and didactic training must be validated prior to approving a new clinician for independent PICC insertions; as well as documentation to complete the simulated Competency Assessment.

Supervising people in a way that is positive and encouraging takes skill and maybe a few tips along the way!


1. Emphasize the importance of a preceptor for patient safety
2. Describe the characterstics of a good preceptor
3. Assess methods that promote student learning from preceptor experience and knowledge
4. Review the components of a successful insertion
5. Discuss the central line bundle checklist and a preceptor's responsibility for sterile insertion field
6. Evaluate the risks associated with placement of peripherally inserted central line catheters
7. List competency assessment criteria and steps necessary to precept a PICC placement

Nancy Moureau is an internationally recognized speaker and expert in the field of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) and vascular access. She began her nursing practice in 1981, received her certification as an 9ntravenous specialist since 1987 and currently serves as a professional registered nurse of the PICC/IV team at Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina. As the owner and CEO of PICC Excellence, Ms. Moureau functions as an educational consultant, working with program development, project management, advisory boards and speakers' bureaus to share information about vascular access.

As a well-published author, Ms. Moureau is constantly involved with research and literature analysis, providing information and interpretation for individuals, manufacturers, hospitals and groups. She is a speaker and expert throughout the United States and abroad on subjects specific to PICCs, ultrasound, central lines and general vascular access. She began her PICC insertion training at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas. She later studied at Gemelli Catholic Hospital in Rome, Italy, Royal Berkshire Trust Hospital in Reading, England, and Gartnavel Royal Hospital - National Health Trust in Glasgow, Scotland, for central venous catheter insertion training. Her training at these facilities included PICC, internal jugular, tunneled catheter, xillary and port insertions.

Most recently, Ms. Moureau chaired the International Consensus Forum for the World Congress of Vascular Access (WoCoVA) Standard Minimal Requirements for Central Venous Access Devices. An adjunct associate professor at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, Nancy is involved with research through the One Million Global (OMG) Prevalence study and a member of the Alliance for Vascular Access Teaching and Research (AVATAR).
