Description

Vascular access devices, what and when to use for PICCs
In this online education PICC Excellence will:
-Define and outline two specific goals for device selection
-Provide a quick review of the various types of vascular access devices available on the market
-Discuss under which circumstances each device is chosen as well as various considerations and limitations
-Review and discuss the seven factors to consider for each and every patient prior to the selection of a vascular access device
-Vascular access devices provide a means to safely administer medications to a patient for the duration of therapy.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Define goals of device selection
2. Describe types of vascular access devices including uses and limitations
3. Discuss therapy/patient factors to consider prior to device selection
4. Review vascular access devices selection process based on therapy and patient conditions

Nancy Moureau received her training at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC and at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. She received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Research at the School of Nursing Griffith Graduate Research School (GGRS) at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. Additional medical/clinical training includes two years at CETEC Universidad in the Dominican Republic as well as an externship in OB/GYN at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, FL. Nancy received additional training at the Policlinico Gemelli Catholic University and Medical Center in Rome, Italy, at Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust in Reading, England and Gartnaval Royal Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland. She holds the following certifications: Certified PICC Ultrasound Inserter (CPUI), intravenous specialist (CRNI) by the Intravenous Nurses Society (INS) and Vascular Access Board Certification (VA-BC) from the Association of Vascular Access (AVA).
